Nothing but the display. Take a look at the confident Motorola patent

Have you always found the construction of phones with a display significantly wrapped around the side edge, as is the case with the Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha, crazy and useless? So deliberately look at what patent the brand has registered Motorola. Its theoretically intended mobile occupies except the top and bottom edges only a single endless display. Although it may seem like a current fad, it is actually a supplement to previously registered documentation.

Already in the summer of 2020, Motorola Mobility LLC filed an application with the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) to patent a phone the cover actually consists mainly of the display. The drawings and text description were registered last December and it turned out that in August the company added further details for operation. The patent is also processed by the German DPMA and the worldwide registrar WIPO.

As the display gives no space to the side hardware buttons, the use of virtual ones is considered. For example, it should also respond to tilting the phone or shaking it, so it wouldn’t matter in which direction you pulled it out of your pocket. The bottom should have a SIM card slot, a USB-C connector and a speaker with a microphone. The top edge should be occupied by the “power” button and again by the speaker and microphone. The big question is cameras, but these are probably considered in form lenses below the display. A stylus is also mentioned.

At first glance, this Motorola device looks very engaging, but it is also immediately clear that what problems there would be in normal use. Leaving aside the probably easy breakage or damage, interactions and unwanted touches are also a question. And last but not least, the price. The fact that the aforementioned Xiaomi Mi MIX Alpha only made it to a mass-unsaleable concept confirms the top.
