Nokia will soon let you lease devices

It seems that Nokia will soon offer a new way as an alternative to buying a new smartphone. The manufacturer’s own app promotes the leasing of a Nokia device. What can we expect?

Lease your new Nokia?

Sustainability is something that Nokia always emphasizes with new devices and announcements. It now seems that the brand is preparing for the next step. The manufacturer’s own app pays attention to the ‘Nokia Circular’ program. It seems that devices cannot be bought, but leased. This can be seen as a subscription in which you transfer a certain amount each month to the Nokia account.

The ad talks about ‘Experience the best of Nokia, without owning a phone’. Although the word ‘lease’ itself is missing in the expressions, it does seem to point in that direction. Telephones must be prevented from ending up on the waste mountain. Nokia probably wants to take this step to pay more attention to the environment. Fairphone recently launched the Fairphone Easy program, a comparable service for leasing a device.

Leasing a smartphone is not entirely new. A few years ago, the providers KPN, Hi and Telfort were enthusiastic about it themselves. With a device lease you pay a fixed amount per month for the chosen smartphone during the term of your contract. Afterwards you can choose to buy the device or to send it back to the provider. It was far from a success.
