Nokia sues Chinese OPPO over 5G and other patents
Finnish brand Nokia is one of the oldest manufacturers of mobile phones and one of the largest patent holders in mobile technologies. Right because of them now according to the portal Foospatents sues Chinese society OPPO.
OPPO uses Nokia patents even after the license expires
So far, OPPO has used Nokia patents on the basis of a license agreement, which they signed in 2018. According to the portal Foospatents however, its validity has expired and OPPO thus uses Nokia’s patents illegally. The Finnish brand claims that it tried to extend the contract on fair terms.
“We negotiated an extension of the patent registration, but OPPO rejected our fair and reasonable offer. Litigation is always a last resort for us, and we have offered to initiate independent and neutral arbitration in order to resolve the matter amicably. ”
Patents for which companies are in dispute should cover 5G connectivity, security features and the user interface. Needless to say, all these technologies are an integral part of today’s smartphones. The lawsuit was to be brought in both Asian and European markets, such as Germany, France or the United Kingdom.
An agreement is still likely
Of course, the Chinese company OPPO is defending itself against the lawsuit, claiming that Nokia’s negotiations on the renewal of the contract are incorrect. However, it is still likely that the whole dispute will end in an agreement, as was the case in previous lawsuits. Nokia itself settled a lawsuit with Daimler last year.
He eventually entered into an agreement to pay Nokia’s license fees because the production of his Mercedes luxury cars was endangered. This year, Nokia also reached an agreement in a lawsuit against Chinese manufacturer Lenovo, which infringed twenty of its patents on video compression.
