Nobody needs that much range
The range is often considered a decisive criterion for or against an electric car. It has to keep going. Tesla boss Elon Musk now sees things differently. He rejects the range dreams of Tesla fans.
Musk makes an announcement: Teslas don’t need more range
What Elon Musk is always saying on Twitter, you have to dare first: In one of his most recent tweets, the Tesla boss opposes a mantra of e-mobility: e-cars need as much range as possible. Not so according to Musk: For him Teslas don’t need to be able to drive much further than they are currently doing.
To be more precise, already the Range of over 400 miles (approximately 644 km) more than most drivers use would. Tesla could have built an electric car with a range of almost 1,000 km a year ago, but decided against it, the CEO continued:
On the one hand, because the previous battery capacity was rarely fully utilized. Another reason: The larger and heavier batteries would allow for extremely long range to the detriment of other driving characteristics walk. Musk mentions the acceleration and general driving behavior as well as the efficiency of his Stromer.
Tesla fans worried about new electric cars
Musk’s announcement has an obvious benefit: with the competition from Lucid Air, but also Mercedes or Polestar, Tesla has long since ceased to sit comfortably on the range throne. Mercedes is currently leading the comparison with the EQS. If you no longer value range, it doesn’t scratch the Tesla image if other manufacturers get more out of it.
There is more to Tesla than just e-cars:
Tesla fans who gather under Musk’s contribution are ambivalent: some would do without better acceleration in favor of maximized range. Others are content with the status quo. On the other hand, it is worrying what Musk’s announcement could mean for the models already announced. So far, a longer range has been specified for Tesla’s Cybertruck and the new Roadster. The Model S Plaid+ was originally planned as the new range star in the Tesla portfolio, but has since been removed from the planning.
