no longer available from 1 July

The Do Not Call Register will cease to exist. The register became active in 2009, but that is coming to an end. There is good news though; companies that want to contact you by phone must adhere to different rules. What will change?

End Do Not Call Register

The Do not call register will no longer work from 1 July 2021. From that day on, companies must comply with new rules of the Telecommunications Act. Because of these new rules, companies are not allowed to just call more people with the aim of selling something. For that reason, the Do not call register has become redundant. There are three situations in which a company is allowed to call you. If you are a customer, have been a customer, or if you have specifically agreed to a product from that company. The companies are obliged to ask for every call whether they still give permission to be called, or whether it should be withdrawn.

A company must also keep track of how a number was obtained from someone, and where this was done. Up to three years after an agreement, a company may contact someone by telephone with the new law. After that, the permission for this will automatically expire. Another important change with the new legislation is that anonymous calls are no longer allowed by companies that want to sell something; a recognizable number must appear on the screen. The data from the Do not call register will be destroyed after 1 July.
