‘Next iPad Air probably won’t get an OLED screen’

Apple has canceled its plans to give the next iPad Air an OLED screen. That puts a well-known person nicely. The company is concerned about the cost and quality of the intended panel.

‘No OLED screen for next iPad Air’

Well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo claimed last March that the iPad Air would get an OLED screen next year. He is now coming back to that, according to a document in the hands of MacRumors. Both the cost and the quality of the display are disappointing, according to Kuo.

We will never know if Apple even planned to provide the iPad Air with an OLED screen in 2022. With such a display, there would be no reason for many people to opt for the more expensive iPad Pro. The 11-inch version now has a regular LCD screen.

Kuo still thinks that the 11-inch iPad Pro will switch to mini-LED next year. That seems like a logical prediction. The 12.9-inch model already has such a display. Mini LED offers a higher contrast than normal LCD screens. The color reproduction and black tones are also a lot better. Oled remains superior in that area, however. However, mini-LED achieves a higher brightness and the risk of burn-in is a lot smaller.

So how is Apple going to upgrade the iPad Air?

How is Apple going to upgrade the iPad Air if the next version doesn’t have an OLED screen? In any case, the tablet will probably get a faster processor. The current iPad Air runs on the A14 chip, while the cheaper iPad mini now has an A15 processor on board. That’s the same chip that’s in the iPhone 13. That is of course very strange.

Another possibility is that the iPad Air will get a ProMotion screen. Such a display is now only found in the Pro models and ensures that all pixels are refreshed 120 times per second. This makes the image feel much smoother.
