New wood town is being built in the industrial area of Stockholm
City planners want to build the largest wooden city in the world in a former industrial area in Stockholm, Sweden. 7,000 offices and around 2,000 apartments made of solid wood are to be built for this purpose.
In the past few decades, new global flows of goods have emerged and made industrial areas superfluous in many places. For example, many companies are increasingly buying products from abroad if they are cheaper. As a result, many industrial areas in cities became unused wasteland.
Even if jobs were lost as a result, the change in the industry also has advantages. Because this creates new areas for city planners – for example in Stockholm. Therefore, in the Swedish capital, an area of 25 blocks of flats is being built now the largest wooden city in the world.

In comparison to classic residential buildings, the city planners want to make the houses mostly out of wood and do without dirty concrete. As a result, the ecological footprint of the buildings is significantly lower than with classic structures. 7,000 offices and 2,000 new apartments are to be built on the 25,000 square meter site.
Restaurants and shops that are within walking distance should make the new district particularly attractive. So far, the city’s residents have mostly had to put up with longer commutes, since most office buildings are north of the center and residential buildings are south of it. The project should therefore also have a subway connection.
New district becomes its own little “15-minute city”
All in all, the Swedish city planners would like to turn the area into a so-called “15-minute city”. The infrastructure used on a daily basis should then be accessible on foot or by bicycle within a few minutes. The start of construction of the project was officially announced for 2025.
The use of wood instead of concrete has another advantage. Because the construction of wooden houses is mostly faster and less noisy. If everything goes according to plan, the first tenants can look forward to moving into their property in 2027.
