First responder – the person behind the uniform

Renaldo Ishaak: first responder on Queen’s Day 2009. The military police biker is one of the first on the scene as soon as the black Suzuki Swift crashes into ‘De Naald’ in Apeldoorn after its deadly ride. Ishaak immediately knows: this is an attack. The killing machine turns out to contain no explosives, but the deadly act is a time bomb in his head. Ishaak talks openly and honestly about the impact the attack and other incidents had on him: on the person behind the uniform. That uniform protects and gives strength, but makes vulnerable as soon as it goes out. This vulnerability manifested itself in PTSD and turned Ishaak into a broken person, then a better person. And perhaps in an even better military police.

Renaldo Ishaak Renaldo Ishaak is team leader at the Royal Netherlands Marechaussee. His primary working area is Amsterdam Airport Schiphol: one of the largest airports in Europe. He experienced the Schiphol fire, the plane crash with Turkish Airlines, the attack on Queen’s Day and other large and small ‘incidents’. Ishaak is one of the initiators of Bluesupport: a network of (former) colleagues that discusses the impact of work in uniform. ‘He was the first on the scene after the attack and paid a high price’ – Olof van Joolen, Telegraaf
