In GP on prescription, Marnix van der Leest shows the beauty of his profession – as one of the few he is allowed to follow a whole human life. He tells about the girl with pigtails who grows up into a young woman, and her first STD, about a party animal with a death wish, the undiagnosed man who suffers seriously from magnetic radiation, and the chimney after the beautiful deathbed of a nun. These stories show that, in addition to medical knowledge, the GP profession is based on seeing and knowing patients. Van der Leest candidly tells how he struggles with the question of whether he sees and knows everyone well and attentively enough. The daily practice of the general practitioner comes very close.

The last day

On May 6, 2002, Pim Fortuyn was murdered in Hilversum by Volkert van der G. This is the story of that day, as all those directly involved experienced it. On that sixth May, in the parking lot of the Media Park in Hilversum, a then unknown young man drew his pistol and fired six shots at Pim Fortuyn. That afternoon Fortuyn had been a guest on Ruud de Wild’s radio program. Filemon Wesselink, then still twenty, had conducted an interview with the politician just before he left the building. Paul van der Lugt, Ruud de Wild and his producer Merel van Dijk were there when suddenly shots were heard and Fortuyn collapsed. Claudia de Breij and Herman van der Zandt saw him in the parking lot. Hans Smolders, Fortuyn’s driver, did not hesitate for a moment and ran after the gunman.

In this book, Paul van der Lugt describes minute by minute how those involved experienced that fateful day. The last day is a poignant and horrifying reconstruction.
