New iPhone will remain dependent on external chips for a while
Apple wanted to build their chips from scratch, so the iPhone 15 would be the first with its own chip. That’s not happening anymore.
Anyone who is even remotely familiar with Apple knows that the company prefers to offer their own stuff. Only with their own software (iOS, MacOS etc.), repairing with non-original parts is becoming increasingly difficult and of course as many own parts as possible ex works. That does not always work.
Qualcomm
Qualcomm is responsible for the 5G chip in new iPhone models. It works fine in itself, but Apple of course prefers its own chip. That is why they are working hard behind the scenes with a 5G chip from Apple itself. At least, were busy. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple has failed miserably.
Still no Apple 5G chip?
Apple’s 5G chip should be ready for the iPhone 15 in 2023. Then they would show Qualcomm the door and add their own chip to the hardware. So that won’t work anymore. Qualcomm therefore still has some work to do when it comes to supplying chips for the iPhones.
Eventually Yes
Of course, the search for a good 5G chip developed by Apple itself is still in full swing, but the idea of selling it quickly has failed. So expect that chip at some point, but not yet. Apple will therefore remain dependent on external parties in this area for a while. Which, incidentally, was not completely self-evident, because Apple and Qualcomm have sometimes had a fight with each other. A backup plan was chips from Intel, but preferably own chips, of course. Now that the tide has turned with Qualcomm, they will be the main supplier of chips for Apple for a while.
