New iPad Air on the way (but will it appear in 2023?)

The most recent iPad Air appeared in 2022, but Apple is now working on a successor. What improvements will this new iPad Air get and can you buy it as early as 2023?

New iPad Air on the way: this is what you can expect

Apple is currently working on a new iPad Air. That is usually what reliable Apple connoisseur Mark Gurman says in his most recent newsletter. Unfortunately, he couldn’t say exactly when this sixth-generation iPad Air will appear.

Gurman doesn’t expect major updates to the iPads this year. He did say that new iPads often appear around October. But don’t expect a big reveal. At least, not until the first iPad Pros with an OLED screen and an M3 chip appear. Rumor has it that it will happen sometime next year.

A new iPad Air with slightly better specifications could not really be called a major update. So that would mean that the iPad Air will appear in 2023. However, Gurman could not say whether we can expect this sixth-generation iPad Air in October. It would therefore also be possible that we will not see the next iPad Air until 2024.

Apple upgraded the iPad Air in 2022. Then the mid-range tablet got an M1 chip and an improved front camera of 12 megapixels and Center Stage. There is also a faster USB-C port on the iPad Air 2022, the cellular version has support for 5G and comes in new colors.

There is a good chance that the iPad Air 2023 or iPad Air 2024 will receive a new chip. We hope this will be an M2 (or better). In addition, it is also quite possible that the front camera will be moved, just like with the iPad 2022. The ultra-wide front camera is there on the long side of the iPad. This is useful for Facetime calls, for example.
