New firmware update for (almost) all AirPods
For almost all models of AirPods, Apple has released a new firmware update. What exactly the update entails is not clear, in the description you can at least read that it concerns bug fixes and other improvements. It often only becomes clear after a while what exactly changes with the new firmware. For example, Apple released an AirTag update at the end of last year to prevent stalking.

In principle, you don’t have to do anything to update your AirPods. If your earbuds (or headphones) are near your iPhone, the latest firmware will install automatically. You must have Bluetooth enabled. Sometimes the firmware is not installed automatically. It is therefore useful to check whether your earphones are completely intact up to date are. This way, you can check whether your AirPods have the latest update
Apple has brought the new update 5E135 to almost all models of the AirPods. The firmware is supported by the second and third generation AirPods, the first and second generation AirPods Pro and by the AirPods Max. Only the first generation of AirPods will not receive the new firmware.
To check if the latest firmware is already installed on your AirPods, follow these steps:
- Open ‘Settings’ on your iPhone or iPad;
- Go to ‘Bluetooth’;
- Tap the information button behind your AirPods;
- Scroll down to ‘Info’;
- You will then see the most recent update of your AirPods under ‘Version’.
Is 5E135 behind ‘Version’? Then your AirPods are equipped with the latest firmware. If your AirPods are still running on an older version, they will most likely be updated later today.
