Netflix expands its European production capacity and chooses Spain
Netflix has inaugurated new filming studios in Spain, doubling its production capacity in this country, which in just a few years has become one of the main centers of audiovisual creation in Europe
Netflix settles a little more in Spain
These new studios, located in the Ciudad de la Tele (Television City), a vast audiovisual complex located in Tres Cantos, in the northern suburbs of Madrid, include five film sets and around thirty editing rooms. These new premises will double Netflix’s production capacity in Spain, with a total of ten sets, spread over an area of 22,000 square meters including production offices, make-up and hairdressing areas, and a cloakroom, specifies the group in a press release.
Netflix had inaugurated its first studios outside the United States on this same Tres Cantos site in April 2019, shortly after having had its first planetary success in a language other than English with the Spanish series Money Heist. The group has made it from its main audiovisual creation site in the European Union, with more than 30 films and series shot in 2022, such as Welcome to Eden Where Eliteone of the main Spanish successes of the streaming group.
Spain is “a strategic place” for Netflix, due to its central role “in audiovisual production in Europe and around the world”, said one of the American giant’s global managers, Maria Ferrera, after a visit to the press of the new facilities. A message relayed by the Spanish Minister of Culture Miquel Iceta, who said he wanted “promote the presence of major platforms and major producers” on Spanish territory.
Spain is increasingly popular with series production platforms, which today generate nearly 10,000 jobs, according to the government. The latter has set itself the objective of increasing audiovisual production on its territory by 30% by 2025 in order to make the country a hub for the sector in Europe, drawing on European funds from the mega-plan of post-pandemic recovery.
