‘Name your baby the same as a friend’s child? I don’t think it’s possible’

What if your friend, colleague or family member gives his or her child the same name as your child? Opinions are rather divided, according to our weekly statement.

A small selection of the responses:

  • Letizia: ‘Well, in Italy there is someone in every family called Giovanni or Francesco, so to speak. Very exciting. Oh wait, this is the Netherlands. Of course we have to think about it again.’
  • Bianca: ‘Our girl next door has the same name as my daughter. And I think it’s an honor, because I wrote off quite a few names myself that I really liked, but from which I knew someone by that name and that person didn’t like! So the fact that they still used the name is a compliment to my lovely daughter.’
  • Nadia: ‘With all those strange names these days, they don’t have to worry about me taking the same one.’
  • Ida: “Hahaha. We were all named. All are called Ida, after my grandmother.’
  • Zhane: ‘Not done! I find that terrible. Have a number of people who have done that with me.. Friends and family. Well what do you do about it. Would never do it myself. Choose my children’s names carefully.’
  • Marianne: ‘My husband and I found it more fun to choose a name that you didn’t hear much of and of which we didn’t know anyone with that name. But to each his own I guess. Still, if my friends, cousins, had chosen the same names as our children’s, I wouldn’t have found it so original and not very fun.’
  • Anouk: ‘That’s why everyone knows the names of my children well in advance. If we ever get a girl, we’ll already have a name and everyone in our network knows that name!’
  • Tessa: ‘Well I wouldn’t do it. If you want it so badly that you have to ask them. Out of decent and respect.’
