My must-do at Amazon for real fans

Anyone who really loves Star Trek has been put to a hard test of patience in recent years and has often been disappointed. Fans who turned their backs on the franchise because of this can now tune in again – with one caveat. My personal recommendation in the GIGA weekend column.

Warning: The text contains minor spoilers here and there for Star Trek: Picard Season 3 (view at Amazon).

The start of series like “Star Trek: Discovery” and last but not least “Star Trek: Picard” was always accompanied with great interest and each ended in great disappointment. None of this had anything to do with Star Trek. Confused stories, new characters you couldn’t relate to, and mostly pure boredom.

The rescue of “Star Trek”: Picard still good in the end

But the Fans should not give up hope. The current example makes one of the two series a mandatory program on Amazon or Paramount+. I’m talking about Star Trek: Picard, the finale of which aired on the two streaming services last week.

As a long-time Star Trek fan, I’ve struggled through the show’s first two seasons since launch in 2020. Their launch left me wanting more, yes the authors ran out of breath on the track. What was offered was just ridiculous, sometimes lengthy and chaotic. Various guest appearances, for example by Whoopie Goldberg (Guinan) or John de Lancie (Q), did not help.

Things are going to be fine for fans with Star Trek: Picard Season 3:

Quite a few fans gave up the series as lost and switched off prematurely. It’s unfortunate, because with the final third season of Star Trek: Picard, the series finally got to where it wanted to be from the start.

The Enterprise D crew is back and find each other again over several episodes. The task: save nothing less than the galaxy. Doesn’t sound very creative, it actually is. But How they do, that’s the difference.

You’re rooting for me again, even against an enemy as familiar as the Borg. Last but not least, the soundtrack fits in well, a reminiscence both of the series (Spaceship Enterprise – The Next Century) and, for dramaturgical reasons, of the second feature film (“Star Trek: First Contact”).

Of course, Season 3 of Star Trek: Picard is a only big fan festival. The moment when the old Enterprise D serves as a refuge in the penultimate episode leaves me with goosebumps and a tear or two in my eyes.

My thoughts for the weekend: The column aims to provide food for thought and reflect on the week’s “news flood” towards the end. A small selection of previous articles in the column:

Small caveat: Please ignore seasons 1 and 2

In short: Fans who have previously avoided Star Trek: Picard should definitely check out the final season. Incidentally, the first and second seasons can safely be ignored. To be honest, that’s probably what the authors thought too.

There are only a few points that you should perhaps know in advance. In a nutshell: Picard is à la “Black Mirror” now an artificial, but still capable of dying human. Seven of Nine (Star Trek: Voyager) is officially in Starfleet and Raffaela “Raffi” Musik, an old friend of Picard and former “love interest” of Seven of Nine – done. You don’t need to know the rest of the first two seasons to understand the grand finale.

The “new” Star Trek is finally turning the corner – at least in this series. With “Discovery”, on the other hand, hops and malt are probably lost. I gave up hope long ago, but meanwhile found it again before the end of “Picard” in “Star Trek: Strange New Worlds”.

In the sense: Dear skeptics, dare. In fact, Star Trek: Picard ended up being as good as fans had ever hoped it would be.
