‘My children are only allowed to drink from closed cups with straws outside’
Since Lotus has had children, her wasp phobia seems to be only getting worse. She is terrified that they will be stung, with all the consequences that entails.
Lotus (34), mother of a son of 5 and a daughter of 2:
“A wasp once flew into my brother’s nose and that made a big impression on me as a six-year-old. Probably the cause of my wasp phobia. A fear that, now that I have children, only seems to get worse. I am afraid that they will be stung or, worse, that a wasp will get in their mouth, with all the consequences that entails. The children are also only allowed to drink from closed cups with straws outside, because I have whole doom scenarios in my head.

wasp phobia
In the wasp month of August I deliberately do not do certain things. I don’t go to amusement parks, because I think the wasps are suffocating there. I don’t sit on a terrace, not even in July and September, for that matter, and when we’re invited into someone’s garden, I take my electric fly swatter with me.
“I am considering hypnosis so I can go on holiday in high season”
My garden is free of flowers and plants, there are wasp traps with wasp attractants and I don’t wear perfume in the summer. This allows me to spend time outside in our garden with our children. I’m considering hypnosis so I can go on vacation in high season. Now I don’t dare.”
