Motorists lose most of the tank discount

Only a few days, it seems, was the rebate granted to German motorists. After the price reduction from June 1st, prices are already climbing again and are often as high as before the state intervention. The relief hardly reaches the customers. An analysis reveals how bad things really are.

Fuel price madness: There can be no talk of saving when filling up

While the 9-euro ticket offers a mixed picture after the first weekend, it should already be clear when it comes to the tank discount: it should have gone better, much better. 35 cents less per liter of petrol and a minus of around 17 cents for diesel, that’s what it was supposed to come down to. But the Reality looks different.

After the sale of older remaining stocks of fuel, prices should have fallen significantly since Wednesday, June 1st. A brief downward correction in prices has taken place since then though long gone to the oppositeas an analysis of the time shows: On average, of the 28 cent discount that was determined at the beginning of the tank discount, only 21 cents were left after four days (source: time).

Therefore the mineral oil companies keep a good 40 percent of the tax cuts. Only a good 60 percent of the discount reaches the consumer โ€“ in the best case. Morally questionable, but the corporations can decide on the prices themselves. The discrepancy is therefore not surprising.

The preparatory price increases before June 1st have ensured that the actual savings at the petrol pump are even significantly lower should be. At many gas stations, customers are now paying prices that were easy to find before the discount โ€“ while the savings seep into the deep pockets of the industry. No wonder that an early end is already being discussed.

After the tank discount comes the real price shock

But it will be exciting for consumers again, albeit in a negative sense: Because September 1st will give the oil companies the opportunity to cash in again. If the tax cut is rolled back, prices will go up anyway. A rogue who thinks bad about it, but: It would be conceivable that the Prices are then raised again by the full 35 or 17 cents โ€“ even if they have never been lowered to this extent.
