Motorcycle speed cameras: Can bikers be flashed?

Motorcyclists in particular should not drive too fast – it is more difficult for car drivers to accurately estimate the speed of small objects. This quickly creates a dangerous situation. Can motorcyclists be flashed?

In Germany, motorcycles only have a license plate on the rear, so the question of whether you can be flashed on the moped is understandable. After all, most speed cameras only photograph road users from the front. The fact is: bikers can be flashed, although not always. However, some rare speed camera systems such as speed camera columns are made by front and back images so that the owner of the vehicle can still be contacted. But even then, speeding is difficult because the helmet and protective clothing make it difficult to identify the driver.

That doesn’t mean speeders on two wheels can get away with it, though. Depending on the severity and frequency of the offences the police put more or less effort into the investigation. In extreme cases, officials may even use mobile speed cameras to lie in wait in busy places. Less drastic measures include, for example, the vehicle owner submitting a logbook. It is also possible for the officers to identify the driver based on individual characteristics of the helmet, protective clothing or even the face.

If the motorcycle was only picked up from the front and it is a serious or repeated violation that warrants greater effort, the officers will pull out all the stops. You compare similar motorcycles that are registered in a given district. However, this approach also includes personal visits to the owners with one, is therefore very time-consuming.
