More than 10 million people respond to Elon Musk’s Trump poll

Before buying Twitter, Elon Musk hinted that he was all for Twitter as a place for free speech and that he would like former US President Donald Trump to return to the social medium. Whether Trump really wants that is another matter, but 10 million people have already cast their vote in a poll.

Trump back on Twitter?

Whether those people vote because they are curious about the result or because they actually want to share their opinion about the potential of the return of the sometimes quite inflammatory tweets of former POTUS, that is unclear. In any case, opinions are rather divided: at the time of writing, 52 percent say it’s a good idea and 47 percent say it’s not. The new Twitter owner probably doesn’t even care so much about the question: it’s mainly about the voice of the people being heard. Or, in his own words: “The voice of the people is the voice of God” (Vox Populi, Vox Dei).

There is a good chance that Donald Trump will indeed want to return to Twitter: he has this week sought an appeal to end his permanent ban from Twitter. He was banned because he posted tweets that incited hatred and violence. It all happened around the time Trump supporters stormed the Capitol in early January 2021. Elon Musk thinks freedom of expression is so important that he has already restored the accounts of several banned users.

You can still vote on the poll: it will continue until Sunday a quarter to 2 at night. Given Elon Musk’s popular vote, that poll is likely to be decisive in whether Trump regains his spot on social media. Trump has built his own social medium since his ban, called Truth Social, but he has not had as much success as he had hoped. Instead of the few million followers there, he’d probably like his 80+ million Twitter followers back.

At least, if Twitter still exists: there is a lot of chaos within the social medium. The offices are closed, employees are being fired in droves and more and more technical problems are emerging.
