“Mommy, you look ugly!” and other schoolyard blunders
Nice and embarrassing, when your little dragon echoes across the schoolyard about ‘that bad teacher’ or you fashion choices.
Marlies (44), mother of Thomas (13), Noah (10) and Thijs (4):
“I am with a mother at school waiting for our children. Noah walks up angrily: ‘Mama, we had lessons from a substitute teacher.’ When I ask who that was, he answers just a little too loudly: ‘That teacher you think is shit.’”

casual day
Desirée (43), mother of Jelle (8) and Mick (6):
“Normally I am always slick in the schoolyard. I am a lawyer and when I come to pick up the children I wear nice clothes, matching shoes and my hair is done up with a loose curl here and there.
How different it was this Wednesday afternoon. My head was overflowing and I wasn’t feeling well. Just got your period, busy at work and at home due to a renovation. Since I wasn’t expecting a client consultation, I had put on casual, loose clothing and no make-up. My hair was combed back tightly and to keep my frizzy curls under control, there was a big dot of gel in it.
“I just wanted to disappear”
When Mick saw me, he cried out from the bottom of his heart, “Mommy, you look ugly!” Everyone looked at me. I wanted to just disappear, but I had to wait another ten minutes for Jelle.”
A little too proud
Jessica (29), mother of Lola (5):
“Pretty embarrassing though, my daughter who screams when she is taken through kindergarten: ‘My daddy has a very big dick!’ Miss turned bright red. Like me.”
