“Mommy, why is daddy kissing another woman?”

When Wendy found out her husband had cheated on her, she couldn’t help but shout the neighborhood together. And then he was caught by his own daughter.

Wendy (40), mother of Isabeau (10) and Liam (7).

“Isabeau came down the stairs with big eyes. “Mommy, why is Daddy kissing another woman?” she asked in amazement. She looked at me uncertainly. She knew she had witnessed something wrong, but had no idea what the impact was. I was shocked, I remember how my heart skipped a beat and my mouth went dry.

With a sharper tone than I intended—I didn’t want to startle her—I asked my daughter what exactly she meant. And then she told how she happened to look out the window in her room and see her father kissing a woman extensively in the light of a lamppost.

I wanted to scream loudly and smash something, but I managed to keep calm for Isabeau. I said she could play on her iPad on top of her iPad and then texted my husband Pim asking where he was; That round with the dog took a very long time.

Attention from another woman

When Pim came home I went wild. At first I scolded him and when he looked at me uncomprehendingly, I sneered that his own daughter had caught him with someone else. Pim turned white and preferred to sink through the ground. I told him I wanted to know everything, he couldn’t leave out any detail.

“Nota bene his own daughter had caught him with another”

So then came his confession: that he had been having an affair for five months with a woman in our neighborhood whom he had met at the dog park. They had only kissed, nothing more had happened, he swore. And no, he really wasn’t in love with her and had never intended to leave his family. I believed that, I could see from Pim that he was sincerely sorry. And that this had gone further than he had actually wanted. Ego played a role: Pim and I have been together for twenty years, the attention of another woman gave him the idea that he still ‘counts’.

wake up call

It has now been four months since my daughter accidentally dropped the bomb. We told her and her brother that daddy loved someone else, but loved us even more. I don’t want to burden them with it. The event woke me up. I realize that Pim and I took each other too much for granted and that we should talk to each other more, about things other than the household and the children.

“I realize that Pim and I took each other too much for granted and that we should talk more”

I find that I am still suspicious. Sometimes I check Pim’s phone, where I never find anything incriminating, and when he walks the dog I secretly keep an eye on the time. If that jealousy doesn’t wear off, I want couples therapy. What we have together is too beautiful and precious not to fight for.”
