A white lie is fine, if it is for a noble cause. Because mom also needs a moment for herself every now and then.
Femke (38): “When the kids are in bed, it’s time for Netflix and a treat. Like Toblerone or M&Ms. I hide them from my children because I really want to keep them from my husband and myself.
Sometimes my daughter (8) hears us tearing open a package from bed and then asks: ‘What do you have there?’ I always answer: ‘Nothing, we’re just changing the garbage bag.’ Or: ‘I had to get something out of my bag.’ So far she’s falling for it, but I’m not afraid for much longer. It seems as if she has a special radar for packaging.”

If only I had a dog
Mary (39): “’Mom is going to take out the garbage’ or ‘Let’s take something back to the neighbor’ is my way of getting some time for myself in the evening. Just long enough to be alone for a while and smoke a cigarette in a hurry, behind the bushes or down the street.
Sometimes my neighbor comes out and we smoke one together. I will never smoke in front of Valentine (6) and Michiel (3), but once or twice a week I just crave a cigarette, especially after a busy day at work. If only I had a dog, I sometimes think, I would have a nice excuse.”

Evelyn (38): “I was just sitting on the couch, having a moment to myself. Then suddenly my daughter Emmie (7) came in, while I was having a nice snack. I said that unfortunately there was alcohol in my chocolate, and quickly gobbled it down. Emmie immediately lost interest.”
