Microsoft’s entry into the smartphone market was not exactly smooth. After the company announced the Surface Duo, things went silent for months. In retrospect, the Microsoft Surface Duo turned out to be more of a prototype of what Microsoft had in store, than a phone that shocked the Android market. However, the software giant is not finished with its Surface Duo line and is expected to launch the Surface Duo 2 later this year. After earlier renders were published showing the renewed design of the Duo 2, the specifications came out on Friday.

Microsoft released its first Surface Duo in 2020

Geekbench, a well-known benchmark application, has published details about the Duo 2, MySmartPrice writes. The details also include the chipset that Microsoft will use for the Surface phone, namely the Snapdragon 888. We also find 8 GB of RAM under the hood of the Duo phone. Geekbench does not provide details about the storage memory. The device may be equipped with 128 GB or 256 GB UFS storage, just like its predecessor.

The benchmark results also show that the phone runs on Android 11 and that the Duo performs equal to other Android phones with the Snapdragon 888. Whether consumers will experience this in practice depends on the optimizations of the software and hardware. implemented by the Surface team. It was previously announced that Microsoft has switched to screens with higher refresh rates with the Duo 2, so that movements on the screens already feel smoother.

Improved cameras

One of the setbacks on Microsoft’s original Surface Duo was the 11 MP camera. Not only was it the only camera on the phone, the camera’s performance was nothing to write home about. The Surface Duo 2 will soon have at least three camera sensors. For the main camera, Microsoft may want to use a 12 MP sensor. In addition, the phone has a wide-angle and telephoto camera on the back. Details about the sensors used for those cameras are not yet available.

In addition to the faster chipset, improved screens and cameras, Microsoft also wants to offer its Surface Duo 2 improved connectivity options. The device is rumored to contain 5G and NFC, making the phone more suitable for a wider audience. A larger battery, which has an unknown capacity, should also make the device more suitable for everyday use.
