Microsoft Outlook for Mac is now free (and has a major update)

It took a while, but Microsoft Outlook is finally free for everyone with a Mac. And that’s not all: the app has received a major update.

Read on after the ad.

Microsoft is making Outlook free for Mac users

Microsoft has announced that Outlook will be free for anyone with a Mac. Previously, the app from Microsoft required a subscription to Microsoft 365 or a paid license. As of today, that’s a thing of the past, because the Outlook app is now free to download in the App Store on your Mac.

In addition, Outlook for the Mac has received a major update. The app is optimized for Apple Silicon, Apple’s own chip, which makes Outlook work (much) faster and smoother on your Mac. The new version of Outlook is much more comprehensive than we’ve seen from Microsoft so far. We put together a few of the new functions for you.

Outlook gets widgets and support for Focus

Outlook for the Mac is now not only free, but the update is also a major improvement for the mail service. The update makes it possible to add Microsoft Outlook widgets to your Mac, so that you can see at a glance which appointments are in your calendar today. The widgets for Outlook can be set in different sizes, so that you can arrange your desktop exactly the way you want.

The new Microsoft Outlook app will also receive support for Focus. Focus was introduced in iOS 15, which lets you decide when to see which notifications. For example, you can set a Work focus for your work. Are you at the office? Then only colleagues can disturb you with a report. You create the Focus Personally for at home. Anyone can let your friends and family send you a notification, but messages from colleagues won’t get through.

With the support of Focus it becomes possible to automatically mute Microsoft Outlook in certain situations. If you have linked your work email to Microsoft Outlook, you can turn off the app’s notifications in your Personal focus. Have you linked your personal mail to the updated Outlook app? Then turn off notifications in your Work focus.

Microsoft Outlook supports other mail services

The new version of Microsoft’s own mail service finally supports other mail services after the new update. For example, it is now possible to link your Gmail or your iCloud e-mail to the Microsoft Outlook app. In this way, Outlook is no longer only intended for people with an Outlook email address, which means that the app can be used by many more people.

Microsoft Outlook also supports Handoff after the update, a very useful feature when you use an app on multiple Apple devices. The function ensures that you can start something on one device and then continue on another device. With Handoff, for example, it is possible to start an email on your iPhone and finish it on your MacBook.
