When is the last time you saw a colleague in person? If you have an office job, chances are you have been working from home from your employer for almost a year. Meetings only take place via video calls such as with Zoom or Microsoft Teams. Despite the fact that you see each other via a webcam, such a video call still feels distant. It will never be really fun. Microsoft Mesh comes in its place.
Microsoft Mesh is a new way of meeting each other digitally. It kind of sounds like an episode of Black Mirror. By means of holograms you can see each other in the same room, without actually being there. For example for a work meeting or just a meeting. It is even possible to visualize objects digitally. The possibilities of Mesh seem almost endless. In a video Microsoft shows what can be done.
The meetings on Mesh take place via a HoloLens 2 headset. It is a mix of reality and digitization. You are not really together, but it still feels that way. A Zoom of Teams video call doesn’t even come close to what Mesh can offer. The technology was announced today by Microsoft. Ultimately, it remains to be seen how the technology will be used and when.
