Meta prohibits its employees from engaging in political discussions in the workplace

Facebook parent company Meta apparently wants to ban its employees from conducting political discussions in the workplace. This includes discussions on topics such as abortion, gun control or the effectiveness of vaccinations.

The employees of Facebook’s parent company Meta should no longer be allowed to comment on certain political issues at work. This is from a report by the US magazine fortune citing internal directions from Meta’s HR director, Lori Goler.

Accordingly, there should be a ban on discussing the effectiveness of vaccinations and debates on topics such as abortion and gun control in the company in the future.

Discussion Ban: Meta employees are not allowed to discuss politics in the workplace

According to the report, Goler informed all employees in an internal forum that the Facebook group is introducing new rules that dictate which discussions in the workplace are appropriate and which are not. The HR manager wrote:

As Mark recently mentioned, we need to make a number of cultural shifts that will help us deliver on our priorities.

According to Goler, the consequence is that the company will no longer allow any kind of expression of opinion. Meanwhile, the ban on discussion should primarily help to strengthen the “long-term health of our internal community”.

Freedom of expression in the workplace: Meta’s ban on discussion applies worldwide

A company spokeswoman told Fortune that the new rules will apply to all Meta offices worldwide. Despite the ban on discussion, the US group says it attaches great importance to freedom of expression:

We have updated our employee expectations to reflect what is appropriate for our employees in the workplace. This allows us to reduce distractions while maintaining an environment that is respectful and inclusive and where employees can do their best work.

Meta is repeatedly criticized for preferring a certain political orientation and manipulating its newsfeed algorithms accordingly. Republican lawmakers, for example, accused Facebook of minimizing posts about alleged missteps by Hunter Biden, son of US President Joe Biden.
