Meta, the parent company of social networks Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, is suing hackers who have abused the trust of its users. The attacks were primarily targeted at American citizens. The hackers copied the login pages of Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp and Instagram. They wanted to get users’ credentials. The attacks were carried out through the Ngrok conversion platform.

The platform redirected users by covering up the real fraudsters’ infrastructure. Meta mentions that the attacks have been on the rise since about March this year, and that it has worked with the platform to suspend thousands of URLs.

“This lawsuit is the next step in our ongoing efforts to protect people’s security and privacy, to send a clear message to those who seek to abuse our platform, and to increase the accountability of those who abuse technology.”Jessica Romero, director of the Meta Platform for Enforcement and Litigation, said in a statement.

The lawsuit comes just days after the social network announced that it had taken steps to disrupt the activities of seven entities that created more than 1,500 profiles on Facebook and Instagram, targeting 50,000 users in 100 countries.
