Meta continues to use facial recognition for the metaverse

Yesterday we got the news that Meta, the parent company of Facebook, decided to discontinue its automatic facial recognition software. However, Meta partly returns to this today. The company reports that they still want to use the software for the metaverse, the virtual reality world in which people can meet each other and in which various social media and games have to come together.

Privacy and transparency

Meta tells Recode that the facial recognition software has “the potential to enable positive use cases in the future”. On the other hand, the technology surrounding the automatic facial recognition of Facebook, and therefore of Meta, has been controversial for years. Several experts indicate that the software could violate people’s privacy. They are particularly concerned about the lack of clear rules for using the software.

The latter was also the main reason for Meta to stop using the software. However, the company now states that it is drawing up clear rules. The company also states that it will maintain privacy, transparency and control and will fulfill the needs of the users. To achieve this, Meta wants to make the technology surrounding their facial recognition software and the algorithms they use publicly available. The company says the following about this: ”For all future applications of this technology, we will continue to talk about how we use it and how people can have control over these systems and their data”.

To be clear, the company will stop using automatic facial recognition software on Facebook and Instagram. The more than one billion faces in the database are deleted by the company.
