Mercedes is faster when it comes to autonomous driving
Mercedes will be the first manufacturer to be allowed to bring its advanced assistance systems to the streets in Germany from 2022. With level 3 autonomous driving, drivers can – under certain conditions – do other things on the side.
Drive Pilot: Mercedes S-Class will drive autonomously at level 3 from 2022
The next step on the way to the self-driving car has been taken: Mercedes will be able to put the first autonomous vehicles on the streets in just a few weeks. The Stuttgart-based company is the first manufacturer in Germany to have one Approval for autonomous driving at level 3 receive. Customers should be able to order the “Drive Pilot” from the beginning of 2022.
Under certain conditions, the Drive Pilot will relieve drivers of their work and take the steering wheel out of their hands. This is only possible on the autobahn, in Germany and at one speed up to 60 km / h. The system automatically detects when it can be used and can then be activated (source: Southgerman newspaper).
If it is running, drivers are for the first time no longer responsible for what happens next. Check e-mails, make phone calls, even Gaming or watching a movie on the side, that’s no problem more. Should an accident occur while the Drive Pilot is running, the manufacturer, not the driver, is liable.
Mercedes is faster than Tesla, but also more successful?
Tesla boss Elon Musk has insisted for years that his vehicles can do that too – only the official permit has not yet been obtained. Mercedes is pulling by now. It remains to be seen whether the Stuttgarters enjoy the home advantage here or are actually technically superior. The Drive Pilot customer base will be exclusive one way or another. The system starts up only in the current S-Class offered. A few months later, the Stuttgart-based electric flagship, the EQS, will also receive the Drive Pilot.
You should know these misconceptions about electric cars:
There is still no information about the surcharge. In the S-Class and EQS category, however, it should no longer play a major role. One thing is certain: autonomous driving is and will be so far an absolute luxury feature.
It is still unclear when you will encounter the first cars on the way with drivers taking care of other things. Like other manufacturers, Mercedes is also affected by delivery problems. It will probably take at least a few months after the market launch before the Drive Pilot drives through the area with customers for the first time.
