Making a Duet on TikTok: here’s how

Whether you want to dance or sing with someone: or if you just want to respond to someone else’s video, you can make a Duet on TikTok. It is very easy and fun to do because TikTok gives you a very easy tool to get it done. This is how to make a Duet on TikTok.

But first: privacy settings

A Duet on TikTok is a kind of split screen video: on one side you see the original video, on the other you see yourself. It plays at the same time, but you can pause it during recording if you need to catch your breath or have a coughing fit. There is one important condition for creating a Duet: you must have a public account if you allow other people to create a Duet with your videos. In the privacy settings of your account you can choose who exactly can enter into a Duet with your video: everyone, followers you also follow or nobody (that’s the option ‘only me’). That’s how you do that:

1. Open the TikTok app
2. Tap at the bottom Profile
3. Tap at the top Menu
4. Go to Institutions and Privacy
5. Tap on Privacy -> Duet
6. Choose who you want to allow to create a Duet with your video (Everyone, Followers you follow too or Only me)

You can also choose per video whether you want it to be used in another duet. You do this before you post a video (in the Post screen), but you can also edit it on an existing video (Open the video -> More options -> Privacy settings -> Duet allow). Good to know: different privacy settings apply to young people.

Okay, now you know about privacy, but how do you make one, such a Duet?

1. Open the TikTok app
2. Find a video you want to do a Duet with
3. Tap on To share next to the video (the button with the arrow)
4. Choose Duet (and may take a while to process the original video)
5. Tap the big round record button to start recording
6. When you’re done, tap the check mark
7. Now you can edit your video even further as you are used to on the video platform
8. Then tap Next one
9. Look at the Institutions to make it to your liking
10. Tap a caption for your video
11. Tap on Places

The person who created the original video will be notified that you created a Duet with their video. However, this Duet will not be available on their profile, only the original video is there.
