Keynote WWDC 2022: what Apple should announce (iOS 16, macOS 13, MacBook Air…)
This Monday, June 6 will mark the start of Apple’s WWDC 2022 and it will be keynote day with several announcements. Mostly software announcements are to be expected, but hardware announcements could also occur.
iOS 16
Apple will unveil iOS 16, the new operating system for iPhone. There have been a few leaks about it, here they are:
- New lock screen with wallpapers that would have widget-like functionality.
- Important improvements for notifications.
- Best for the Messages app which would have functionality similar to that of a social network, with a particular focus on voice messages
- Changed to the Health app with expanded sleep tracking and medication management functionality. Apple is working on a tool that would allow users to scan their medications into the app. New features related to women’s health are also expected.
- New Apple applications in preparation, without further information for the moment
- Apple is also working on “new ways of interacting with the system”, but there is no further information.
- New workout types for the Apple Fitness+ app
- Arrival of Apple Music Classical, a version of Apple Music specific to classical music
There is also some information that should be revealed later, when the iPhone 14 and 14 Pro are announced in September:
- A mode for the screen always on (Always-on Display) on the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max.
- A change of interface on the upper part of the screen since the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max will no longer have the notch as we know it, but a pill and a hole.
- A car accident detection system that would automatically call the emergency services when a collision is detected.
- A support for satellites to send emergency messages when there is no cellular coverage and to report major emergencies when coverage is not available.
- Support for a “buy now, pay later” system for Apple Pay
iPadOS 16
With iPadOS 16, Apple would like the iPad to be closer to the Mac than the iPhone. The update would feature a redesigned multitasking interface that would make it easier to switch between tasks and view open apps. It would also be possible to resize application windows. In addition, we would find the management of several applications at the same time, as we can do on a Mac.
macOS 13
macOS 13 will succeed macOS 12 Monterey. The update would offer a new interface at the System Preferences level to get closer to what there is on iOS and have a page for each application in order to easily manage the settings. Apple would also offer Time Machine backup on its servers with iCloud. In addition, several Apple applications should evolve.
What will be the name? It’s possible it’s macOS Mammoth based on an Apple trademark filing.
watch OS 9
The Apple Watch will be entitled to the watchOS 9 update. If we are to believe the leaks, there will be:
- An update to Power Saving Mode that allows apps and features to be used while reducing battery usage.
- A function of detection of atrial fibrillation extended with an additional load, that is to say the frequency with which a person is in a state of atrial fibrillation over a given period.
- Improved health and activity tracking.
- More workout types.
- Additional metrics for running workouts.
- Refreshing of existing dials.
tvOS 16
tvOS 16 will be the update for Apple TV. No details have leaked regarding this release.
Macbook Air?
Will we discover the new MacBook Air? It’s a possibility. The laptop would have a new design with notably white borders around the screen (like the iMac M1), as well as a keyboard with white keys. The screen would be a little bigger, namely 13.6 inches.
On the processor side, rumors speak of the M2 chip, others evoke an improved M1 chip. It’s still blurry.
Mac Pro?
Apple has already teased the arrival of a new Mac Pro for 2022. Will we see it tomorrow at the WWDC 2022 keynote? Maybe. The machine would have up to 40 cores for the processor and up to 128 cores for the graphics part. The chip would thus be more powerful than the M1 Ultra found in the Mac Studio. In reality, the Mac Pro could have two M1 Ultra chips linked together. As a reminder, the M1 Ultra chip is the equivalent of two M1 Max chips linked together.
AR/VR headset?
At this stage, it seems unlikely that Apple will present its mixed reality headset (augmented reality and virtual reality) at WWDC 2022 tomorrow. On the other hand, there is a possibility that Apple will detail the software part.
The WWDC 2022 keynote will start tomorrow at 7 p.m. (French time). It can be followed live on iPhoneAddict or from our application iAddict (App Store Link) on iPhone and iPad by going to the Keynote section.
