Joe Joyce vs. Zhilei Zhang: WBO Interim Title Match

England’s Joe Joyce goes into the evening with 15 professional wins from 14 knockouts. So far he hasn’t had to admit defeat. The Chinese Zhang has lost only once in his career and has won 24 times.

Joyce goes into the fight today as a favorite. Experts see him alongside Oleksandr Usyk and Tyson Fury as the strongest heavyweight boxer in the world at the moment. However, after his recent defeat by Filip Hrgovic, Zhiang wants to show that he is title material and maintain his chances of a real title match. Joyce won the interim title against Joseph Parker last September. The title match results from the two fights between Joshua and Usky, the failed fight between Usyk and Fury and various mandatory defenses. The WBO decided on an interim title as Usyk and Fury hold all the heavyweight titles.

A win today would not secure Joyce a direct seat in a world title fight, but move him to position 3 in the queue. For Oleksandr Usyk there is still a WBA title defense, opponent is probably Daniel Dubios. Filip Hrgovic is waiting for the Ukrainian at the IBF title. Joyce could only intervene directly in the title event if there was an internal fight against Tyson Fury.
