It’s World Radio Day, do you still have a radio? (adv)

On February 13, we celebrate World Radio Day and celebrate the existence of this wonderful medium. Although listening to the radio in the Netherlands and Belgium is becoming less and less, it is still the most listened to medium in the world.

Radio is and will remain important

Listening to radio over the air is slowly being replaced by streaming music. Listening on-demand to the music or conversations you prefer to hear takes the upper hand. Understandable, but unfortunately we are no longer surprised by that.

The radio not only has a function for entertainment, but also for information and education. In times of crisis, the radio is THE medium to get important and life-saving information to you. This certainly applies to situations where there is no electricity available and internet services do not function. It is therefore important to always have a radio at home that is not dependent on power.

What is DAB+?

The radio landscape is changing, not only in programming but also in terms of technology. Since 2015, the radio stations also broadcast via the digital ether and we call that DAB +. With this technique, more radio stations can broadcast, the reception is improved and the quality of the signal is also improved. Eventually, DAB+ will replace the FM frequency. That will happen in 2025 at the earliest.

Listening to radio over the internet

It is of course quite normal nowadays in the Netherlands and Belgium, but we listen to radio en masse via the internet. Every self-respecting radio station has an app that allows you to listen to different channels of that station. After all, via the internet, a station does not have to deal with a very expensive ether frequency that they have to buy (or rent?) from the government.

There are also collection apps in which you can listen to many different stations. Like TuneIn.

Does radio still have a future?

Due to the rise of streaming media, internet radio and on-demand listening, radio stations are having a harder time than before. Research indicates that people listen to the radio for less time. The percentage of listeners is particularly low among young people.

We are curious, do you ever listen to the radio?
