It’s real – and crazy expensive

You have to look twice: hoodies, t-shirts and pants that look like they’re straight out of an 8-bit video game. The new collection of a Spanish luxury label was obviously inspired by pixel art and games.

Loewe shows hoodies, trousers, handbags and more in a pixel look

The fashion maker Lion based in Madrid ( – not to be confused with German TV manufacturer “Loewe Technology”) launches a range of clothing and accessories that are sure to turn heads. Under the slogan “Blown-up pixels create a real world glitch” (in English: “bloated pixels create a disturbance in the real world”) brings a look to the streets that is reminiscent of the early days of computer games.

The collection “Pixel Perfect” can on the Loewe website be ordered. As befits a luxury label, materials and workmanship are of the highest standard. However, this also applies to the prices, which are probably difficult to convey far away from the fashion scene. The white “pixelated top in technical knit” costs an impressive 1,400 euros. The matching trousers “Pixelated trousers” made from the finest silk cost 1,900 euros. For the “Small Pixelated Puzzle Edge bag” handbag, 2,700 euros have to be spent over the virtual counter. Holla, the forest fairy – that’s almost as expensive as current graphics cards.

Video games and fashion: They go together

It’s by no means the first time fashion designers have tapped into the rich video game culture. You can find several pieces at H&M (for manageable prices) that showcase the iconic Playstation logo.

At that time, screen resolutions such as 256 × 240 pixels (e.g. Nintendo Entertainment System, 1986) were the state of the art – games and characters looked correspondingly pixelated and somehow charming. Even though that era is long gone, the style has survived to this day. One could almost say that pixels are timeless.
