is the Magic eraser really as magical as Google claims? (video)

The Magic Eraser or Magic eraser uses artificial intelligence to recognize distracting background objects in photos. Then you can remove them from your photos. We tested it with the Pixel 6 Pro to see if it really works as well as Google makes it out to be.

Google Pixel 6 Magic Eraser

For a whole week you will discover more about the Google Pixel 6 Pro. Of course there is a lot to say about the camera, but we would like to save a photo comparison for the full review. This time we did work with camera software: the Magic eraser or the Magic Eraser in the photo editor of Google Photos.

Tensor, the chipset of the Pixel 6 Pro, is made with artificial intelligence in mind, according to Google. In your photos, the Pixel 6 therefore suggests which people or objects are irrelevant and can be removed. More specifically, Google uses object recognition for this, and it recognizes the contours of people and objects so that you can be removed and filled in in a realistic way. You can discover how the Magic eraser works in the YouTube Short below.

Does it work well?

Magic eraser appears to work well in many situations, but in other circumstances the result is also a bit disappointing. Object recognition is especially difficult for elements that are further away in the picture. Nearby objects recognize the on-device algorithms better and they are removed in a precise manner. That’s because Tensor gets more information about nearby elements, while blurry people in the background are not recognized. They can then just as well be a part of the background for the Pixel 6 that you want to keep.

What do you think of the result of this function? Do you find it stunning or did you perhaps expect more from it? Let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article. If you have a Pixel 6 (Pro) yourself, we are curious about your experiences with Magic Eraser. Don’t have a Pixel 6? With this detour you can already get the function up and running on other Pixel phones.
