Xbox has had a strong focus on streaming features in recent years. However, a new patent now shows that PlayStation could compete with Microsoft in this respect.

A newly-emerged Sony patent shows that PlayStation in the future much more than before with the streaming of video games could employ. While the competitor Xbox is currently more known for the useful Game Pass feature, Sony is obviously considering working on a device that should work in conjunction with streaming sticks – and could thus give gamers access to games without a console.

PlayStation patent: Streaming device surfaced

The Sony patent shows a so-called passthrough device that can be attached between end and streaming devices such as the Apple TV or Amazon Fire Stick. From there, players should be able to Being able to select games from a library via streaming – similar to what is currently possible with films and series from providers such as Netflix. According to the patent, the game library could even be integrated into the streaming stick’s interface in this way.

Xbox continues to develop streaming feature

With its xCloud feature Microsoft has been busy building the streaming functionality for several years for its own platform – and has already celebrated considerable success with it. Game Pass Ultimate subscribers can already stream numerous games without necessarily needing a console. However, a fast internet connection is required.

Xbox also showed off a prototype streaming device in 2022, but the company later backtracked and said it was years away from completion. Possibly Sony could So anticipate the competition with their streaming project. However, it must be mentioned at this point that many patents in the video game industry never make it to the final development phase.
