Is Pebble making a comeback as a mini smartphone?

A crowdfunding campaign has been started to bring back the Pebble. That would not only be great for nostalgic reasons, but also because the plan is to insert the smartphone quite differently in terms of appearance than what we are used to today. This is how things are now with Pebble.

Pebble

It all started with Eric Magicovsky. He is the creator of Pebble and called on people to create a small Android phone to challenge iPhone Mini. Apparently no one took up the challenge, so Magicovsky decided to do it himself. At least, it will be a community project, which is why he is starting a crowdfunding campaign for it. It will be called ‘The Small Android Phone’ team and everyone is welcome to join. It’s all just being discussed in a public Discord space, writes TheVerge. There are quite interesting people among them: Ben Bryant (Pebble Smartwatch), Alex De Stasio (GoPro) and Susan Holcomb (data scientist/writer) for example.

The device will be small and will have a free-standing camera. The camera island seems to be quite important in the design of this phone. You should not expect a 100-megapixel sensor, according to the makers, the phone must take ‘good photos’, and that means, according to them, that 100 megapixels is not a good idea. It will probably be a 50 megapixel camera. Several options are being considered, which you can view below:

Not a high-end device

The idea is that the telephone will be very practical and at the same time very accessible. In addition, everything must be of high quality and the material must feel soft to feel comfortable on your fingers. Does The Small Android Phone Think About Using Silicone Details? That can go either way, because the basic material has not even been chosen yet, such as metal with glass or ceramics. It will probably be a fairly standard type of material, so no experimental variant.

In terms of processors, we look at Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 or an unannounced midrange processor from Qualcomm. In terms of software updates, it wants to support at least two years and a price tag of around 800 euros is being considered. That’s probably a bit much for a phone with the expected specs, but as a new phone maker you’re not going to have millions of phones made at the factory all at once. This therefore ensures a less good price than you can expect from the greats of the earth.

Chances are the phone will get a name that has something to do with small, maybe Pip or Pico, but for now the working title is still Marvin. And yes, that final name can also become Pebble just like that. After all, it’s all about the small size that should make the device very handy, even for people with smaller hands. Many decisions have to be made before the device is available. But the makers also have to find all the parts together. A super small screen already seems to be an almost impossible challenge, so there is work to be done on the not yet existing shop.

Are you waiting for it, a phone that is considerably smaller than what we are used to? Leave it now in the comments to this article.
