iPhone manufacturer wants to dominate the world of electric cars – but it’s not Apple
The automotive world is dominated by long-established brands and manufacturers that have often been known for decades. But the exceptions to this rule are increasing. A newcomer to the industry now wants to become a big player for e-cars – and he is no stranger to other areas.
Challenge to Toyota and VW: Foxconn wants to be the next car giant
Tesla, Volkswagen, Toyota – these are names that are associated with cars all over the world today. Polestar or NIO, to name just a few examples, are much younger and less well known. However, anyone who knows something has already heard of the newcomers to the automotive market – albeit for completely different reasons: the contract manufacturer Foxconn from Taiwan wants to become the eminence grise behind the global auto industry.
Among other things, the company builds a significant part of the popular iPhones for Apple. As a partner for the big names in the smartphone industry, but also for computers and electronics in general Foxconn is involved almost everywhere.
Of the Financial Times according to the Taiwanese company generated sales of 215 billion US dollars last year. With that omitted 40 to 45 percent of global sales in said areas on Foxconn. But because the Taiwanese work on behalf of big brands and rarely work under their own name, they are rather unknown. This should not change with the advance into the electric car market.
From Apple Car to Tesla: Foxconn has big plans
The idea is not new. For example, Foxconn, whose cooperation with Apple has been tried and tested, was traded as a possible partner for the rumored Apple Car. But that shouldn’t be the end of it. Potential partners should be able to find a selection of electric models at Foxconn in the future. The naming is based on Tesla. Foxconn recently introduced three new models, a compact SUV called Model B, an electric pickup called Model V and the Model C, which is due to appear in Taiwan in 2023 – as always with Foxconn, not under its own name.
Anyone who buys an electric car will soon have to calculate very carefully whether the decision is worthwhile:
In the long term, however, Tesla should become more than just a role model for the nomenclature of the Foxconn models. One hopes to build Teslas for Tesla in the future, according to Terry Gou from the Foxconn board (source: Foxconn). The aim is to achieve the same market share in the long term as in the electronics industry. Does the plan work? almost every second electric car in the world would be built by Foxconn – a real challenge to other car manufacturers.
