iPhone 15 Pro Max gets much thinner camera – here’s why
Unlike the iPhone 15 Pro, the iPhone 15 Pro Max will have a much thinner camera. How does Apple do this?

iPhone 15 Pro Max gets new camera
In recent weeks, more and more has become clear about the new series of iPhones. The first photos of the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Pro have been leaked, which already made it clear that Apple is switching to USB-C connections with the iPhone 15 series. Now the first renders of the iPhone 15 Pro Max have also leaked, with the camera island of the new phone especially striking.

This camera island is much smaller than we have seen with the iPhone 15 Pro, for example. The camera lenses protrude even more on the iPhone 15 Pro than we were used to, but this is exactly the opposite with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Why are the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s cameras a lot thinner?
New iPhone gets periscope lens
In recent years, the camera island of the iPhone has become thicker and thicker, but Apple is changing that with the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The phone is said to have a periscope lens, which is intended to zoom in much further than is currently possible with the iPhone 14 Pro, for example. For comparison: with the iPhone 14 Pro you can zoom in 3x, with the new camera probably 10x.
The periscope lens therefore represents a significant improvement and ensures less thick camera lenses. This new periscope lens is placed horizontally in the phone. The light then enters the lens and is reflected at an angle of 90 degrees by the mirror in the camera. Finally it reaches the camera sensor, after which you can take a picture.
This is the big difference with the current iPhone cameras, because until now the cameras were placed vertically in the iPhone. To zoom in far, lenses must have a certain size and depth. Apple has always corrected this problem by making the cameras slightly thicker than the iPhone itself, causing the cameras to protrude. With the periscope lens, the thickness of the iPhone is no longer a problem.
iPhone 15 Pro Max no longer has buttons
So the new photos seem to confirm that the new iPhone 15 Pro Max will get a periscope lens. It’s about time, because that makes it possible to zoom in much better with your iPhone. The new images also reveal that the new iPhone no longer has physical buttons, but special buttons that vibrate when you ‘press’ them.
