While the iPhone 14 has yet to appear, we are already looking forward to its successor. The iPhone 15 Pro gets a camera with an incredibly good zoom.

iPhone 15 Pro with periscope lens
This reports Jeff Pu, an analyst in the computer industry. He predicts that Apple’s 2023 flagship will have a periscope lens with 5x optical zoom. Now the Pro iPhones still have to make do with a camera that zooms in optically up to 3x.
According to the analyst, Apple is negotiating with Lante Optics, which will become the main supplier of the periscope lenses used in the iPhone 15 Pro. Apple is said to have already received several components from the company and a final decision will be made in May.
If Apple approves the components, Apple will introduce the periscope lens with the high-end models from 2023. They are probably called the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max. Should the deal go through, Lante Optics will supply more than 100 million components to Apple.
What is a periscope lens?
Don’t expect a submarine-like construction with a long tube that you slide out at the back of the iPhone. The periscope lens of the iPhone gets a technique that significantly improves the optical zoom without this being accompanied by a thicker lens.
To improve the optical zoom, a greater distance is needed between the lens and sensor. This provides a longer focal length. Normally, that lens and image sensor are placed vertically from each other. The greater the distance, the better the optical zoom – but also the more the lens protrudes from the iPhone.
With a periscope lens, you can increase the focal length without making the iPhone thicker. Rather than stacking the lens and image sensor vertically, this is done along the length of the iPhone. A mirror is used to ensure that the incoming light reaches the parts. The iPhone will soon be able to zoom in much better, while the camera bump on the back will remain just as compact.
Not for the first time
Analyst Jeff Pu isn’t the first to predict a periscope lens for the iPhone 15 Pro. The highly reliable Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo previously reported that the company is working on a periscope lens for the ‘2023 iPhone’ for a better optical zoom.
But first the iPhone 14 (Pro) will appear, which Apple will probably launch in September. And that is also a device to look forward to. Rumors suggest that the flagship will have an upgraded camera with a 48-megapixel sensor. It would also be possible to record 8K videos.
