Sony’s WH-1000XM series of over-ear headphones is one of the best on the market. The headphones offer great sound quality and excellent noise cancellation. Images and specifications have now surfaced of what the Sony WH-1000XM5 should be and in the images we immediately see a striking adjustment.

Sony WH-1000XM5 gets more modern design

Sony announced the third generation of its noise canceling headphone series in 2018, the Sony WH-1000XM3. The fourth generation followed in 2020, the Sony WH-1000XM4. That means we get to see the fifth generation this year. And TechnikNews has managed to get hold of images of that generation.

The most eye-catching detail is the design that we see in the images. That design has remained virtually unchanged from the first generation. Presumably because the design was just right, they must have thought ‘never change a winning team’. This year, Sony might take a different tack, resulting in a sleeker, more modern design, particularly evident in the transition from the headband to the earcups. It is now quite flat and wide and would have a narrower and rounder design.

Sony WH-1000XM5 gets longer battery life

In addition, the Sony WH-1000XM5 would have a battery life of 40 hours with active noise cancellation (ANC) enabled. This is 10 hours more than the battery life of the XM4 with ANC activated. The new headphones are said to be fully charged in 3.5 hours. We also see specifications such as Bluetooth 5.2, a 3.5mm headphone jack and an on/off slider instead of an on/off button.

Unfortunately, nothing is known about prices, availability or other specifications. Just like the appearance, the suggested retail price has been the same for years, so for convenience we assume 380 euros. We can also apply that principle to the launch, which would then take place in August.
