iPhone 14 crash detection tested in video: does it really work?

One of the new features in the iPhone 14 is crash detection. But it’s pretty hard to see this feature working. Still, a YouTuber made it happen, and this video shows you whether crash detection on the iPhone 14 actually works (or not).

Crash detection iPhone 14: does it really work?

Trying out the new Crash Detection feature on iPhone 14 is quite tricky. The iPhone 14 (Pro) uses the data from the accelerometer, the gyroscope, the microphone and the GPS to find out whether you have indeed bumped into something.

However, it is very difficult to test that function. Dropping your iPhone on the floor does not trigger the function in any case. This is because the iPhone has not detected certain things (for example, the sound of an airbag going off).

YouTuber TechRax wanted to try it out and denounced Apple’s accident detection with an old car and a test location. In the video below you can see exactly what happens when you get into a car accident with an iPhone 14.

After the accident, it takes a few seconds, but after that a notification does appear on the screen of the iPhone 14. It says that the emergency services will be called unless you cancel the notification in time by swiping the screen.

iPhone 14: This is Crash Detection

The iPhone 14 has a number of new features, but Crash Detection is the most striking of these. With this accident detection, your iPhone knows when you hit something while driving.

If you bump into something with your car, the iPhone 14 will give a notification. You then have (according to Apple) 20 seconds to swipe this message away, otherwise the emergency services will be contacted.

Apple’s Crash Detection is available on the iPhone 14 (Plus), iPhone 14 Pro (Max), Apple Watch Series 8, Apple Watch SE 2022, and Apple Watch Ultra. Apple told the Apple Event that they tested the Crash Detection feature on four types of serious car accidents. These are a frontal impact, side impact, rear-end impact and a car roll-over collision.
