iPhone 13 Pro Now Supports ProRes Video (And Here’s What You Can Do With It)

The iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max with iOS 15.1 support ProRes, a video codec aimed at movie makers. In this article you can read how to activate ProRes for video on the iPhone and what you can do with it.

Read on after the ad.

What is Apple ProRes?

ProRes is a video codec aimed at professionals. It offers high color fidelity and much less compression. Because more data is recorded, more is possible in post-processing. In that respect, ProRes compares well with what RAW is for photos.

ProRes is often used for commercials and feature films, so that indicates that it can make beautiful recordings. But just like with a RAW photo, you have to make an effort first. The images have a lot of data, but are unpolished. It is up to you to achieve great results in post-processing.

A ProRes video takes up a lot of space. One minute of filming in HD with ProRes takes about 1.7GB. When recording in 4K, that is even 6GB. For this reason, filming in 4K with ProRes is only possible on iPhone 13 Pro models with a storage capacity of 256GB or more. With a 4K recording, you film with a maximum of 30 frames per second (fps). For an HD film, that is 60 fps.

Enable ProRes video on iPhone 13 Pro

As you can read, ProRes is not a video format to send a funny video in WhatsApp. Only use it if you plan to achieve a professional video production, where you take extensive time for post-processing. You can do this in Final Cut Pro, for example.

Filming in ProRes with iPhone

ProRes requires an iPhone 13 Pro (Max) with iOS 15.1 or later. To be able to film with it, you first activate a function in the Camera app. Here’s what you need to do to enable ProRes video on your iPhone 13 Pro:

  1. Open the Settings app, scroll down and tap “Camera”;
  2. Choose ‘File structures;
  3. Set the switch behind ‘Apple ProRes’ to green.

Now open the Camera app and swipe to the ‘Video’ mode. On the left you will see the option ‘ProRes’. Tap it to activate the feature. If you hold the iPhone horizontally, you can see at the top left with which image quality you record (4K or HD) and with how many frames per second (24, 30 or 60),

Conveniently, the Camera app also immediately indicates how much time you can record in ProRes. This is based on the storage capacity of your iPhone. Are you curious about more improvements to the camera? In the article below you can read more about the new camera functions of the iPhone 13 (Pro):
