iPad Pro M2 can record ProRes videos with third-party apps but not Apple’s

The iPad Pro with the M2 chip, recently available for purchase, is capable of recording ProRes video for the first time. But to do this, you have to use an application from the App Store. Indeed, the Apple Camera which is preinstalled does not support such a system.

As noted Macotakara, Apple’s Camera app on the iPad Pro with the M2 chip offers different formats for recordings, but ProRes is missing from the list. On the other hand, the format is available using third-party applications like FiLMiC Pro.

A question may arise: is this a voluntary choice of Apple or a bug? The iPhone 13 Pro and 14 Pro support such recording, but not the tablet which has just been released with the M2 chip which is very largely capable of supporting such a system (the proof with third-party applications).

Apple does not comment publicly on this story. Now hopefully the feature will be enabled with a future iPadOS 16 update.

As a reminder, the Apple ProRes format makes it possible to edit multi-stream content in real time with professional image quality. On iPhone, the Camera app’s Video mode lets you record video in Apple ProRes format using one of the device’s sensors.
