Internet Explorer 11 will be disabled in February 2023
An update to Microsoft Edge on February 14, 2023 will be an opportunity to deactivate Internet Explorer 11 at Windows 10 level. The objective is of course to push users who still benefit from this browser to switch to Microsoft Edge.
Microsoft noted that this change will not affect companies that have already discontinued Internet Explorer 11 in favor of the Chromium-based Edge browser, with its IE mode, better compatibility and other improvements. According to Microsoft, businesses that still rely on Internet Explorer should take action now to avoid any disruption to business after February 14, 2023, when Microsoft will end use of the older browser.
Despite deactivation, the browser will remain “hidden” in Windows. The retirement of Internet Explorer will not happen overnight. Visual references (icons in the Start menu and taskbar) will remain in the operating system until Microsoft releases an update scheduled for May 23, 2023 (optional) and the Patch Tuesday update of June 2023 (mandatory). IT administrators can speed up this process by using the IE Disable Policy.
As a reminder, Internet Explorer is already absent from Windows 11. It is however found with Windows 7, 8, 8.1 and 10. This is an opportunity to recall that Microsoft intends to abandon support for Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 in January 2023 .
