Instagram Threads: Clone of Twitter reaches 100 million users

Threads has already reached 100 million users in a record time of five days. With this, Twitter’s competitor has reached a new and striking milestone. For example, the social media platform has even reached more users than ChatGPT, which took two months for the same result.

What is Threading?

The new platform Threads is linked to Instagram. The parent company Meta has created a smart set, as evidenced by the high number of users. Threads’ purpose is very similar to Twitter’s. As a user you can share self-created messages, videos and photos with your followers. When you sign up as a Threads user, you use the same username as on Instagram itself. It is therefore easy to log in to Threads via Instagram, because both are linked to each other. According to The Verge, this may also be a reason for the amount of users in a short time.

Launch of the new platform

The launch of the new platform does not yet work in all countries within Europe. It is not yet certain whether Threads complies with European regulations. That is why we have to wait a while before we can use it in the Netherlands. However, Meta has done a smart job by launching Threads early. That’s because Twitter has recently set limits on users reading tweets. As a logged in user, you can no longer read all tweets. Meta has responded to this by launching Threads and offering an alternative.

Although it is not yet certain whether it is a permanent thing, the results so far are very positive. The great success of Instagram Threads users beats ChatGPT’s record. On the one hand, that’s nice. Threads is not yet available everywhere, while ChatGPT is. On the other hand, it also makes sense, because the platform is easy to link to Instagram.

Instagram Thread details

Threads is a decentralized app. This means that the app can work together with other apps, such as Instagram itself for example. In addition to using your Instagram username, the bio in your profile and blocked accounts are the same. With a Threads profile, quite a lot of your Instagram profile is used. Apparently a post can contain a maximum of 500 characters. In addition, links, photos and videos no longer than 5 minutes may be shared on the platform. Currently, no ads are shown through Threads because the platform is still new. Meta wants the platform to grow as quickly as possible. However, there is a good chance that this will change in the future. No app has remained free of advertisements, so that will certainly happen with Threads as well.

Twitter under fire

Despite the criticism from many Twitter users, Elon Musk seems to care little about this. Today, Twitter verified accounts can read up to 6,000 messages per day. Unverified accounts can only read 600 messages and the new unvaried accounts can only read 300 messages. Advertisers in particular are not happy with the new measure, despite Elon Musk saying he wants to increase the number of messages per user again. According to them, the new measure ensures that advertisements have less reach.
