The end of the 9-euro ticket is a done deal: the cheap ticket for local and regional transport will expire at the end of August as planned, the Chancellor and Minister of Transport leave no doubt about that. At least the citizens of North Rhine-Westphalia can look forward to a small consolation that will ease the pain of parting a little.

The 9-euro ticket will probably remain a unique summer fairy tale. Despite numerous requests and suggestions, an extension or follow-up regulation is not in sight. At the end of August there will be an end to inexpensive trips in national local and regional transport. Immediately afterwards, however, the so-called “subscription campaign” will take place from several NRW transport associations, which at least somewhat fills the gap in the 9-euro ticket.

Subscription campaign instead of a 9-euro ticket for NRW residents

The Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Ruhr (VRR), Verkehrsverbund Rhein-Sieg (VRS), the Aachener Verkehrsverbund (AVV) and the Westfalentarif are taking part in the campaign. On All weekends in September and October 2022, during the autumn holidays and on German Unity Day, subscription customers can drive through NRW at no additional costthe four transport associations cover the entire area of the federal state.

Also included are some Trips to neighboring federal states such as Rhineland-Palatinate and Lower Saxony and even to the Netherlands. In contrast to the 9-euro ticket, taking bicycles and people with you on the days of the action is included, and dogs generally travel free of charge. All other details and regulations for the subscription campaign are available on a Special page of the state of North Rhine-Westphalia.

Chancellor Scholz has also made it clear that there will be no continuation. But there is a struggle about a connection regulation. There are many suggestions for this – such as the VCD’s Länder-PlusTicket or the Left Party’s 365-euro ticket. Lower Saxony, on the other hand, is thinking loudly about a “North German model”.
