IKEA turns your furniture into a wireless charger for 40 euros (Update)

IKEA has a new solution that allows you to place a wireless charger on your furniture yourself. ‘Sjömärke’ is the name of the gadget and you can use it in a subtle way, for example under a desk or wooden table.

*Update 9/23 at 3:30 PM: IKEA Belgium has confirmed to us that the charger is also coming to the Low Countries. We’ve updated the free/busy information in this article.

IKEA’s wireless charger

IKEA was relatively quick to implement wireless qi chargers in its furniture. That is a handy solution if you are ready for something new, but not if you are still satisfied with your current interior. That is why the brand now has the ‘Sjömärke’, a wireless charger that you can place under your existing furniture.

Sjömärke is in fact a fairly thin rectangular cabinet that you place under a wooden table or desk with double-sided tape. You can then place a phone that supports wireless charging on the surface and it will start charging. That works with a low power of about 5 watts, but the advantage is of course that the charger is completely invisible.

There are also a few more requirements. This gadget must be connected to AC power and it will not work on all surfaces. The furniture must be made of wood or plastic. Furthermore, the distance between your phone and the Sjömärke should only be between 8 and 22 mm.

Price and availability

The accessory can already be seen on the IKEA webshop in the United States, but at the time of writing we do not yet see it in the Dutch or Belgian. IKA Belgium told us that the Sjömärke is for sale from 1 October for 39.99 euros. It won’t be in stock at some stores until later this year.
