Mini-SUV as an electric car: VW still has an ID.2 in stock

It is a declared goal at VW that e-cars should become cheaper in the future. The Volksstromer from Volkswagen will need some time for this. On the one hand, there is a need for affordable ICE alternatives, especially during the current record inflation. On the other hand, such models have sold well for VW and Co. so far.

In the coming years, the Wolfsburg want to convince again in the lower price segment. This is shown by the plans for the ID.2. It is said to be the cheapest electric car from VW to date. But the price is one thing, the trend towards SUVs is something completely different. Because the ID.2 will be a small car, the electric legacy of the Polo. Customers who value a lot of space and a high seating position will probably not get their money’s worth.

But with an offshoot that VW is also said to have in the works, called ID.2 X (pronounced: Cross). It should be from 2026 – so one year after the ID.2 – inherit the T-Cross (Source: car newspaper). The compact or city SUV should be on the same platform as the ID.2, the small MEB (modular electric drive system). The lower purchase price is likely to be achieved primarily through a small battery and the lack of dual motors.

Price still unclear, but VW is on the right track

According to Autozeitung, the Small-MEB can be expected to have a battery capacity of 50 to a maximum of 80 kWh by 2026. The ID.2 X can do one thing estimated range of up to 400 km. But these are just guesses at the moment. In terms of price, VW should charge a little more for the compact SUV version than for the basic ID.2. Originally it was supposed to be available from 20,000 euros, but now the entry-level price is closer to 25,000 euros.

ID.2 and ID.2 X are intended to demonstrate the cost advantages of e-cars at VW:

VW should with the ID.2 X anyway on the right track be. In addition to SUVs, which have been popular for years, many competitors rely on comparable models. Smart ventures into the SUV segment with the #1. The Mokka e from Opel, for example, is considered a full-fledged SUV, but is small compared to the VW models. The ID.2 X could close this gap for Volkswagen and should generate a lot of interest.
