“I pulled his stuffed toy out of his fist and threw it in the trash”

Your patience is put to the test when your kids beat each other’s brains in the backseat or just can’t stop whining and sucking. And then even the most merciful mother sometimes loses her temper.

Claudia (33), mother of Koen (7) and Tycho (5):

“I have a short fuse, I know that myself. What I especially don’t like is the bickering between my sons. And then I can be happy if it stays with words only, because if they get the chance they fly each other’s hair. Preferably when they are in the car together. Usually I cool my anger by slamming the car door very hard, it seems to be specially made for it.

Boontje comes for his wages

Last week I was driving with the boys to my parents, when Tycho snatched a drawing for grandma from Koen’s hands and tore it up. So mean. I took the exit, pulled up at a gas station, pulled Tycho’s dinosaur out of his sleeve and tossed it into the nearest trash can. In retrospect, I thought my reaction was a bit exaggerated, but the funny thing is: it did help. Since I taught him the ‘bean comes for his pay’ principle, Tycho is a lot better to eat.”

Out of the car

Menno (39), father of Isabel (8):

“In the car on the way to France, Isabel behaved impossibly. Whining and sucking until I was done with it. I dropped her off at the beginning of a parking lot and picked her up five minutes later. She was sweet for the rest of the trip.”
